Piece 20

This double page spread in my sketchbook is my artist research and analysis of Chuck Close. I chose to work in the style of Close as he focuses purely on portraits and I wanted to create my own interpretations of his work. I like how Close has influenced me to focus more on detail and concentrate more on the structure of the human face. Close's work has helped me a lot and has benefited me hugely when producing portraits as the practice and interpretations have been successful.

Piece 19

This piece of work I created in my sketchbook has been influenced from my own primary imagery of myself. I chose to do a portrait of myself as I wanted to experiment in the style of Chuck Close and create a piece of work from my own primary imagery. For this piece I worked with shading pencils as I wanted to make an accurate copy within the shading and detail within the hair. I am pleased with the outcome of this piece as I feel my primary imagery worked well in the style of Chuck Close.

Piece 18

This piece of work I created is a copy of Gabriel Moreno's work. Moreno works with a wide range of pens to apply detail to his work. I enjoyed creating this copy as I like how the technique is different to other work, I also enjoyed focusing on each individual line to allow the the lines to represent the different shades and detail within the work. I was pleased with the outcome of my copy as I enjoyed working in the style of Moreno and would like to carry on working in this method and technique.

Piece 17

The theme of this piece of work I created was based around the topic of family and the structure of hands and feet. For this piece I worked with shading pencils as I wanted to create a delicate piece of work with a lot of detail. I liked creating the creases in the hands as I was able to apply a lot of depth to allow my work to become realistic. For the technique and method I smudged the pencil within the face and hands to allow the different shades to flow.

Piece 16

This piece of work I created is in the style of Richard Nott which was something I enjoyed doing. As I worked in the style of Nott, the media I used included black ink and dark watercolours. As Nott portrays his work to look dark and subtle, I allowed the lighter areas to be enhanced as I created the darker areas with a lot of black ink to emphasis the delicate lighter areas.

Piece 15

This piece of work has also been created through my own primary imagery I took of a daffodil. For the media in this picture I have focused on using a minimal amount of water color and applied a large amount of water to create the lighter tones of the flower. For the darker shades I used more vibrant colors and applied a lot more paint to add depth and definition.

Piece 14

This double page spread in my sketchbook was also still continuing around the theme of the structure of flowers. Working with primary imagery allowed the work to become more enjoyable as I was able to choose exactly what I wanted to work with. For these two piece of work I created I decided to just use pencils to work with. I chose to just work with pencils as I wanted my work to develop over a long period of time so I was able to apply a large amount of detail and concentrate purely on each and every petal of the flowers. Deciding to draw the rose was much more enjoyable as I liked how much detail there was to apply and how much shading I was able to experiment with.

Piece 13

This double page spread is based around the work of Richard Nott. Nott's work was very influential when creating my theme for the structure of flowers. I enjoyed working in the style of Nott as his work is very minimal but can convey a huge amount of detail. I also enjoyed the technique I was able to attempt in the style of Nott as he uses very dark tones when portraying shading within his work. My own interpretations allowed me to work with black ink and focus more purely on the delicate flowers he allowed to stand out within his work which then created a statement and made the flowers the subject matter.

Piece 12

This piece of work I created was also produced during a life model session. I enjoyed creating this work as I was able to work with colour within life model drawings instead of charcoal or pencil. The methods and techniques I used are something I still like to progress with, I applied the darker shades of the model with a deep red coloured and combined them with the lighter shade of yellow chalk. I was then able to blend them together to create a mutual tone which allowed the shades and tones to flow and work well together.

Piece 11

This next piece of work I created was produced during the period where I attended life model drawing. This piece is one of my favourite life model drawings I created as I enjoyed working with charcoal and focusing purely on one section of the body. The specific section of the body I focused on allowed me to apply a greater amount of detail and concentrate more on certain areas. Using a charcoal pencil allowed me to work in a lot more and apply a very significant amount of delicate detail.

Piece 10

For this piece of work I produced, I based the theme around the structure of hands and feet. For this piece I worked from an image of a babies foot as I wanted to produce a large scaled piece of work which would allow me to apply a range of shading. The technique I mostly used for this piece was smudging charcoal and standard drawing pencils. The charcoal became beneficial as it created a more in depth feel and allowed it to become realistic.

Piece 9

This piece of work was produced during a regular life model session I attended. I like the outcome of this piece as the technique I used was different and I feel strongly supported the structure of this model. For this piece I worked with a Berol pen and water which allowed me to apply a minimal amount of pen throughout the lighter parts of the model and then apply a greater amount of pen for the darker areas. I feel this technique worked well and really allowed my work to become realistic.

Piece 8

This combination of smaller scaled work represents how I can incorporate different types of techniques and methods within my work. This experimental page shows how I work with different materials such as watercolour and pen, acrylic paint, collage paper and also pencils. Some of the methods I used include crosshatching, carving and also collage. I enjoyed producing this as I liked experimenting with a wide range of materials.

Piece 7

This next piece is also in the style of John John Jesse. This large scaled piece I produced represents the theme of Punk Jesse was trying to convey. I liked working with watercolour for this piece as the technique I used allowed me to apply a greater amount of detail and work with bold, vibrant colours. I like working in the style of Jesse as his work is unusual and has its own individuality.

Piece 6

For this piece of work I focused on the influence from John John Jesse. I enjoyed working in the style of Jesse as I find his work unusual and like how it creates a statement. I like the comparison between the work I produced in the style of Chuck Close and John John Jesse's work. For this piece I worked with watercolours which I feel created a strong bold statement and allowed the theme of Punk to be portrayed.

Piece 5

This piece of work has been created through the influence of Gabriel Moreno's work. For this specific piece I focused on my own primary imagery and created a self portrait. I used the same techniques as Moreno and produced this piece with standard ballpoint pens. I included the bird in this piece as I wanted to include the influence from Moreno. I feel this method works well when creating portraits.

Piece 4

For this piece of work I focused on the work by Gabriel Moreno. For Moreno's work, I produced copies and interpretations with standard ballpoint pens. I enjoyed working with this technique as I like how the use of line adds depth and creates the different tones of shading within the work. I like how there is also a minimum amount of colour which I feel enhances the use of shading.

Piece 3

This piece of work is also another copy by Chuck Close. I enjoy focusing on his work as I am able to concentrate a huge amount on the detail and apply more depth to my work. I also like how I have developed within producing portraits and how I am satisfied with the outcome.

Piece 2

This piece of work is based around the work of Chuck Close. Chuck Close has allowed me to experiment more when creating portraits, which I believe have developed well throughout my progression. For this piece I worked with charcoal as I believe it allowed me to produce much more depth to the shading and create an accurate copy of his work.

Piece 1

This piece of work is based around my own primary imagery. For my topic I focused on the formation of flowers, to produce this piece of work I worked with acrylic paints and allowed the negative space to allow the structure of the flower to become more bold and create a statement.
